Question: If someone is always bloated and gets gassy very easily and farts a lot, do they have to renew wudhu every time? because like a lot of times I have to redo wudhu twice for 1 prayer, and I almost always have to redo wudhu for all of the 5 prayers. I dont know if its a medical condition, but this happens every day. Thank you
Praise to be Allah
Summary :
If someone passes wind continuously due to a condition or sickness, they should renew wudhu for each prayer. If it happens during prayer, it doesn’t invalidate the prayer.
Detailed Answer :
Passing wind typically breaks wudhu , but for individuals with a medical condition causing frequent wind, Islamic rulings provide some ease. The basic principle is that wind emission invalidates wudhu , but if it occurs continuously, one should perform wudhu when offering each prayer. If wind passes during prayer, it does not invalidate the prayer, since the person has a valid excuse due to their sickness or confition and there is no need to redo the Salah.
Doubts About Breaking wudhu:
It’s common to feel as though you’ve passed wind during prayer due to the whisperings of Shaytan. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“He should not stop praying unless he hears a sound or detects an odor”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 137; Sahih Muslim 362)
This means you should only stop if you are certain that something has come out, not just because you suspect it.
Continuous Gas Issues:
There are two primary scenarios:
- Intermittent Wind: If the wind stops occasionally, perform wudhu and pray during these intervals.
- Continuous Wind: If it is non-stop, perform wudhu after the prayer time begins and pray. It is acceptable if wind passes during the prayer.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah stated:
“Whoever cannot keep his wudhu for the duration of the prayer should do wudhu and pray, and it does not matter what comes out of him during the prayer. His wudhu is not invalidated by that. The most he has to do is to do wudhu for each prayer” (Majmu’ al-Fatawa, 21/221).
Practical Steps for Continuous wind condition:
- wudhu for Each Prayer: Perform wudhu at the start of each prayer time.
- Prayer Validity: If wind passes during Salah, it remains valid.
- Avoiding Distraction: Do not let these issues distract you from your Salah.
Conclusion:
For those who pass wind continuously, it does not invalidate the prayer if wudhu is performed for each prayer. Focus on certainty, not on doubts about breaking wudhu , and do not let this issue cause you stress or distraction in your worship. This dispensation reflects Islam’s flexibility and compassion towards those with ongoing conditions.
