The Three Fundamental Principles

Knowing Allah, following the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and understanding Islam are very important for every Muslim. These three principles help us build a strong faith and live our lives the right way. By learning and practicing these teachings, we can grow closer to Allah, follow the good example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and live according to Islamic rules. This makes our faith stronger and helps us live good, balanced, and fair lives that please Allah.

1. Knowing Allah

Introduction: Tawhid, or Allah’s oneness, is Islam’s core belief. It means recognizing Allah’s unique attributes and worshipping Him alone.

Explanation: This principle has three parts:

  • Tawhid al-Rububiyyah (Oneness of Lordship): Allah is the only Creator and Sustainer of everything.
  • Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah (Oneness of Worship): Only Allah deserves our worship and devotion.
  • Tawhid al-Asma wa-Sifat (Oneness of Names and Attributes): We believe in Allah’s names and qualities as described in the Quran and Hadith.

Important Verses:

“Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'”

Surah Al-Ikhlas, 112:1-4

“And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.”

Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:163

Significance: Knowing Allah helps us build a strong faith, filled with love, fear, and hope in Allah. It guides our actions and intentions to be sincere and devoted to Him.

Important Hadith:

“To Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them…”

Sahih Muslim 2677a

“Whoever dies while knowing that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah will enter Paradise.”

Sahih Muslim 26

2. Knowing the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

Introduction: The second principle is about recognizing and following the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). He is the final messenger and our perfect example.

Explanation: Belief in the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) means accepting his teachings, following his Sunnah, and understanding his role in guiding us.

Important Verses:

“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.”

Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:21

“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”

Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:107

Significance: Following the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) helps us grow spiritually and morally. It strengthens our connection with Allah.

Important Hadith:

“None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all the people.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 15

“I have left among you two things, you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah.”

Muwatta Malik Book 46, Hadith 3

3. Knowing the Religion of Islam

Introduction: The third principle is about understanding Islam’s core beliefs, practices, and rules, which guide us in living a life that pleases Allah.

Explanation: Islam covers all parts of a Muslim’s life, including:

  • Beliefs: Faith in Allah, angels, books, messengers, the Last Day, and Divine Decree (Qadar).
  • Five Pillars: Shahada (declaration of faith), Salah , Zakat, Sawm (fasting), Hajj (pilgrimage)

Important Verses:

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.”

Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:3

“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam…”

Surah Al-Imran, 3:19

Significance: Understanding Islam helps us practice it correctly, live ethically, and interact justly. It promotes a balanced and righteous lifestyle.

Important Hadith:

“Islam is built on five: Testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, paying the Zakat, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 8
