Kufr, derived from the Arabic word “kafara,” meaning “to cover” or “to conceal,” refers to the rejection or denial of any of the fundamental beliefs of Islam. In Islamic terminology, it means covering the truth of Islam.
The Quran states:
“Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrong [or injustice] – never will Allah forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path”
Quran 4:168
Types of Kufr
- Kufr Al-Akbar (Major Kufr):
- This is the outright denial of Allah’s existence or His attributes, rejecting the prophethood of Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, or denying any of the pillars of faith.
- Example: Atheism or denying the finality of the prophethood of Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
- Kufr Al-Asghar (Minor Kufr):
- This involves acts of disobedience or sins that do not necessarily expel one from the fold of Islam but are serious enough to be considered forms of ingratitude towards Allah.
- Example: Engaging in sinful behavior despite acknowledging the oneness of Allah.
- Kufr An-Nifaq (Hypocrisy):
- This type of kufr involves pretending to be a Muslim while concealing disbelief.
- Example: The hypocrites (munafiqun) in the Prophet’s time who outwardly professed Islam but inwardly disbelieved.
- The Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:
“The signs of a hypocrite are three: whenever he speaks, he tells a lie; whenever he promises, he breaks his promise; and whenever he is entrusted, he betrays”
Sahih al-Bukhari 33
Quranic References
- Major Kufr:
“And they rejected them, while their [inner] selves were convinced thereof, out of injustice and haughtiness. So see how was the end of the corrupters”
Quran 27:14
- Minor Kufr:
“If you disbelieve – indeed, Allah is Free from need of you. And He does not approve for His servant’s disbelief. And if you are grateful, He approves it for you”
Quran 39:7
- Hypocrisy:
“Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little”
Quran 4:142
Practical Implications of Kufr
- Pure Belief: Ensuring that one’s belief is free from any form of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and kufr.
- Constant Self-Reflection: Continuously evaluating one’s faith and actions to avoid falling into any form of disbelief.
- Avoiding Hypocrisy: Being sincere in one’s faith and actions, ensuring that outward expressions of faith match inward beliefs.
