FAQ

Zakah

Am I Eligible to Give Zakah?

If your savings or assets exceed the Nisab, which is equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver, and one lunar year has passed, you are required to give Zakah at a rate of 2.5% of your total qualifying wealth.

Who is eligible to receive Zakah?

Zakah can be given to the following eight categories of people, as specified in the Quran: the poor, the needy, Zakah collectors, new Muslims, slaves or captives, those in debt, in the path of Allah, and stranded travelers.

Can Zakah be paid in advance or in installments?

Yes, Zakah can be paid in advance or in installments, as long as the total amount due is fulfilled when the Zakah is actually obligatory.

What happens if I miss paying Zakah in previous years?

If you've missed paying Zakah in the past, it's obligatory to calculate and pay the amount due for all previous years. Zakah is a debt owed to Allah and must be settled.

Is it permissible to give items as Zakah instead of cash?

It is permissible to give Zakah in the form of goods such as fabric, food, and so on, if it serves the interests of those entitled to Zakah.

Can Zakah Be Given to Non-Muslims?

In general, it is not permissible to give Zakah on one’s wealth or crops, or Zakat Al-Fitr, to non-Muslims, even if they are poor, wayfarers, or debtors. However, it is permissible to give charity to poor non-Muslims. There is one category of Zakah that may be given to non-Muslims, which is “to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam)” (cf. Al-Tawbah 9:60). It is permissible to give Zakah funds to those non-Muslims who hold positions of authority and influence among their people, if there is hope that by giving them something they may become Muslims, then those who are under them may become Muslims too.
